MUNA is the greatest band in the world…at least according to their merch. The 3 piece band made up of lead singer Katie Gavin, guitarist Josette Maskin, and guitarist/producer Naomi McPherson started making music together at the University of Southern California in 2013. After being dropped from their label during the pandemic, Phoebe Bridgers signed them to Saddest Factory Records, and they have since established themselves as a queer electropop powerhouse. They brought the first of 2 sold-out shows at D.C’s 9:30 Club to a crowd of ecstatic fans, many of whom had been waiting in line since early afternoon.

MUNA is currently touring in support of their self-titled third album. They opened the show with “What I Want,” a pop anthem that builds into an exploding danceable chorus. Most of the setlist was made up of infectious gleaming dance tracks, but they also included a cover of The Killers’ “Mister Brightside,” and few stripped back ballads like country-inspired “Kind of Girl.” The crowd jumped, screamed and danced all night. Before the finale performance of “Silk Chiffon,” Katie exclaimed “We’re here for a queerful joy revolution!” MUNA truly facilitates an atmosphere of celebration, self-expression, and acceptance.

Opening for MUNA was pop punk trio, Meet Me @ the Altar. They met online and started making music together through the internet in 2015. Their early 2000’s inspired sound has caught the attention of icons like Blink 182’s Mark Hoppus and The Wonder Years’ Dan Campbell. Their latest single, “Hit Like A Girl,” is out now via Fueled By Ramen.
