Flowers For The Living
Mourning [A] BLKstar

On Flowers For The Living, Mourning [A] BLKstar continues their Afrofuturistic mission, building a brighter future through an exploration of the sounds and events of our turbulent past. Formed in Cleveland, Ohio in 2016, the band’s releases are powerful statements on the state of our world but never feel monolithic. Instead, each new missive is an essential thread in the tapestry, the larger story, they are weaving. Flowers For The Living weaves itself handily into tapestry, radiating the passion of its creators for its duration. Tracks “Stop Lion 2” and “Letter To A Nervous System” highlight the influence of artists like Curtis Mayfield and Alice Coltrane on their work, but regardless of the touchpoints, they always manage to sound unique, a singular musical force. It’s rare for a band with this much depth to convey those deeper currents while remaining so accessible, but such is the triumph of Mourning [A] BLKstar. — Kevin

Phantom Island
King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard

King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard are 15 years and 27 albums into a career that should warm the heart of any maximalist: known for the incredible energy of their marathon shows and a breakneck release pace, the Kings are nevertheless still committed to breaking new ground. Phantom Island sees the band working with a symphony orchestra for the first time in their career, on an album that leans all the way into 70s singer-songwriter vibes. The Gizz have proven themselves an essential part of the current musical landscape, and Phantom Island shows that its easier than ever to cheer on a band whose greatness cannot be affirmed (or refuted) by a single album.   — Eduardo
